In Memoriam of ASA Member J. R. Westfall

J. R. Westfall, In Memoriam

It is with much sadness that we must report the death of San Diego Chapter member and past Chapter President, Mr. Jean-Rene (J.R.)  Westfall, ASA. J.R. passed away peacefully at his home at about 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2014.  He was 86 years old, and remained active until his last day.

J.R. is survived by his wife Martha, his sons, Phillip, Brian and Randy, five grandchildren, and one great granddaughter -- as well as many friends and appreciative colleagues who recognize J.R.'s  many voluntary contributions to the San Diego Chapter and to the Appraisal Profession at large.

Former ASA San Diego Chapter member Steve Rosefeld, a good friend and colleague of J.R.’s, wrote:

Jean Rene's passing represents a profound loss to the appraisal community and to those who knew him.  He was always generous of his time and knowledge and helped launch the careers of many appraisers over the years. When I decided to become an appraiser in 1995, it was he who mentored me and introduced me to ASA.

More importantly, he and Martha were family friends. They have known my wife, Jo Anne, since she was a little girl, and years later, when our boys lost their grandparents, J.R. and Martha filled that roll.  They were always included in family events and holidays. He and Martha always graciously gave of their time and love and took us in as part of their family. As said by another family member, “He was a lover of life and art, an epic storyteller and a devoted family man. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him knew what a special person he was.

J.R. will be remembered for his knowledge, his generosity, his humor and his smile. He will be greatly missed.

A Catholic Mass will be served in Colorado Springs this week.  J.R. will be interred at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Escondido, California -- at a time and date in October to be announced.

Condolences may be sent to:
